Our Queen Contestant - Anna Hamilton is going to do a bake sale for the Lookout 4H Queens Contest at SAY Plastics on Friday November 18th and we would appreciate it if all parents would make something that we could use at the bake sale to help out. They can bring it to the meeting on Monday (provided it would still be good on Friday to sell) or they can bring it to my office thru Friday at 2:00 pm.

East Texas Show Star Series.

The 3rd Annual East Texas Show Star Series will be held on October 23rd & 24th at the Nacogdoches Show Barn. This is a great opportunity for 4-H families that are new to showing livestock, as well as those who are seasoned veterans of the show ring. Friday, October 7, 2011 is the "EARLY" deadline toregister for the above mentioned event. After October 7th, a $10 increase will be asssed for those registrations received after that date. Leadership Lab Deadline Fast Approaching

If you are not aware, 4-H Leadership Lab is a District Event open to any senior 4-H Member 13 & up. It is a two 3 day /2 night camp with lots of activities and chances to meet 4-H'ers from all over the District. This year's theme will be "Ready; SET; Go". I know it may not sound cool, but there will be lots of really cool science experiments to perform and projects to participate in. Believe me...If you go, you'll have a BLAST!

If you want to attend, you'll need to complete and submit the following forms to the County 4-H Office no later than June 15th at 5PM.

You'll have to register and pay ($80.00) online through 4-H Connect no later than Midnight on June 15th.

I received this news from Casey's mother and wanted to share this with everyone. This is a GREAT accomplishment that I know Casey is very proud of. Way to go Casey! Good luck and keep up the good work.

Casey will be participating in The Dogwood Jamboree Talent Search Artist of the Year on Saturday, December 11th at the Palestine Civic Center in Palestine, Texas. Casey was chosen out of many and has become one of the three finalists. He will be performing in the Jamboree's December Show "Always Christmas" on this night.

The three finalists are Casey Henderson of Jacksonville (our very own), Emily Wilson of Groesbeck and Madison Fuller of Fairfield will be vying for the youth Artist of the Year award during the evening.

Local artist will take the stage with those from other cities all over the State of Texas.

Everyone is invited to attend this event. Advanced tickets for this event can be purchased for $12.50 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12 (children under 5 are admitted free) until 5 p.m. Friday at Hometown Pharmacy and The Dogwood Diner in Palestine or by calling 903-729-7080 or 903-729-5611. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15 per adult.

Preparing Bags for the Elderly

Mrs. Allen decided that we could put some gift bags together during our meeting tonight to hand out to the patients of a local nursing home. The kids had a blast decorating the outside of the bags and then filling them with goodies. These bags were prepared with lots of love from our members.

We would like to thank Ms. Emprimo for delivering the bags to the Nursing Home.

This is just a token from the hearts of our kids showing the love for their commmunity. Great job, members!

November Meeting

Mr. Allen presented plaques to each of the hay judging team contestants tonight. Mrs. Yancey also gave a report on the Concession Stand Sign Up Sheet for the Livestock Show. This is a fund raiser for the PALS group in our county. Kaitlyn also gave an update on her fund raisers that our club is doing to help her raise money that will hopefully get her a chance to win Show Queen in March.

We have decided to cancel the Halloween Party due to having to many conflicts in everyones schedule. We will be planning our Christmas Party and hopefully it will be bigger and better. If anyone would like to help with the planning process, please let Cindy Allen or Tina Barber know. The plan as of now is that the Club will furnish the sandwich trays and such, each family will be ask to bring a dessert of some sort (small) and then each kid will be ask to bring a small gift so that we can play a game including a gift exchange. This event usually gets quiet interesting with the exchanges!

The deadline to sign up for YES Camp is quickly approaching. There have been several of you that have been asking about this Camp. It is a great place for the kids to go and spend the night and enjoy the fun that 4-H has to offer. The Camp takes place just outside of Elkart and is not that far to travel. I have been there and was VERY impressed with the facility. I am almost certain that we will have kids going from our club. There is always lots of parents to host this event. East Texas Show Star Series

4-H and FFA are communities of youg people across America who are not just learning but also implementing the different life skill they learn, such as leadership, citizenship and personal responsibility.

With the above mentioned skills in mind, this event will provide additional educational opportunities for our area 4-H and FFA members participating in the livestock project areas, specifically in teh areas of beef, lambs and goats. The main objective is teaching the basic principles of livestock management as they relate to facility maintenance, selection, nutrition, animal health, handling , showmanship and transportation.

In addtion, a "Quality counts" program is included in the training, with the purpose to provide an oppportunity for youth across our region to learn personal character atttributes and acceptable livestock management practices accociated with these projects. This unique combination of subject matter should result in teh exhibition of the highest quality livestock projects by youth with unsurpassed character and ethics.

Spring Breaks are quickly approaching and this is a great time for you to practice with your projects. Make sure that you spend as much time as you possibly can to train your animal to do exactly what you expect. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Remember that the March meeting will be a practice show for anyone that would like to attend with their animal. We can practice with everything but the pigs. There will not be any pens set up to handle them. Robbie/Tina Barber and Greg/Cindy Allen will be coordinating this meeting for me.

Just a reminder that ALL photos for the District photography contest must be given to Willie by 5:00 pm, March 19th.

Even if you did not compete at County level you may till compete at District. Photos must have been taken March '09 - March '10. The Divisions are the same as county/state with 2 additions. There will be a District Theme: "Water". Water must be the ain focus of your photo in this division. There is also a Technical Challenge Division: "Sell a Product."

Photos for State must be postmarked by April 15th. You mail those in yourself. For both State and District you must register at 4-H Online. Cost at District is $5 for the first phot and 50 cents for each photo after that.

State is $10 per photo.

at the Showbarn at 6:30 pm

Please remember to bring a gift ($5) to play the game. We will have sandwiches, chips, dips and drinks. Each family is ask to bring a small dessert. I have had several families to volunteer with something else that night. Thanks to all of you for helping with this party. We will have a BLAST!

Don't forget that we will be having our FOOD DRIVE at the party also. Please bring a non-perishable food item to add to the basket. Wendy Emprimo has volunteered to deliver this to HOPE on December 8th at 4:30 pm. We would like to have several members there at HOPE to help Wendy present this food to them. If you can attend this event, please be at HOPE at 4:15 pm on December 8th.

It was decided that our December meeting will be our Christmas Party. It will be held at the Showbarn on December 5th. Each family needs to bring a SMALL dessert and a gift for each kids in your family that wishes to play the game. The club will furnish the pizza, drinks and paper products unless someone would like to help with these.

You do not have to own your animal by this date, but make sure to get your entry in so that you do not have to pay a late fee. You MUST have your animal by December 5th for validation. If you would like to bring your entry forms to the meeting on Monday, I will gladly accept them. Please remember to bring your entry money also. Make the checks payable to CCJLS! The Halloween Party is set for Saturday, October 31st at 6:30 pm at the Barber's Barn. For directions please call Tina Barber at 586-3697. We will pull out on the hayride at 7 pm hopefully.

The club will be furnishing the hot dogs and drinks. We ask that each family bring a dessert of some sort. We need a couple of families to volunteer to bring the chips for the party. We will need approximately 6 bags of chips.

Please RSVP back to me and let me know if you plan to attend this party. We need a head count so that we do not buy more than we need. Please do this by Friday morning if possible.

Second Place Team at Hay Show

Lookout 4-H took the honor of having the Second Place Team this year at the Hay Show. The team consisted of Austin Essex, Kyle Allen, Colton Allen and Adam Traylor. They had a total score of 560 points. Great job, guys!

(Austin was the only one that attended the Awards Ceremony due to Kyle, Colton and Adam having a football game the same night.)

Youth Loan Workshop

Hello All,

Rusk's Singletary Public Library Hosts Youth Loan Workshops for 4-H & FFA ProjectsSubmitted by: Rene' McCracken, CEP-AgNR Cherokee County.

Cherokee County Cooperative Extension Agent, Rene' McCracken has coordinated with the Singletary Public Library in Rusk and Truman Lamb of Heritage Land Bank-Palestine to present Youth Loan Workshops for agriculture projects on Nov 2nd and Nov 9th. This is a free workshop for all youth 10 yrs and up currently enrolled in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter. The loan terms are: up to $5,000, for one year, with minimum interest paid back after the sale of the project. The loan can be used to purchase market or breeding livestock, materials for shop projects, or to purchase feed for livestock.

At Workshop #1 general loan information will be provided and application forms distributed to those interested youth. At the 2nd Workshop on November 9, 2009, we will hand in the completed forms and assist in completing them if necessary. Loans should be funded by the middle of November. Program begins at 4:30 pm each session. Space is limited - so RSVP early at 903-683-5416 or Lrmccracken@ag.tamu.edu

Who Should Come? All FFA & 4-H Youth (10 yrs and up), Ag Teachers and 4-H Leaders, Extension Agents, Mentors and Parents. Extension programs serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

Hay Judging Workshop

This was a very successful workshop. We had several different groups represented at this event. There were approximately 40 + kids that attended. We would like to thank Mr. Max McCormick, Mr. Willie Arnwine, Mr. Aaron Low and Greg Allen for conducting this event for the kids. This is very helpful in letting these kids practice judging some hay samples at this event. Again, thanks to all that help put this event together.

Food Show Demonstration

Mrs. Wendy Green attended our meeting and demonstrated how easy some recipes are to prepare quickly. Mrs. Green ask for volunteers and got plenty of help in preparing this recipe. Raffle Tickets

Kaitlyn has the raffle tickets that we are selling for the Queen's Contest. They handed some out Monday at the meeting, but still have tickets available. As a club, we MUST sell $400 worth for our club to be able to show in the livestock show in March. It is VERY important to help sell these tickets as a club. All of the proceeds go to the showbarn for improvements at the facility. These tickets are for a chance to win a $250 cash prize. There will be 4 of these given away on that day. Several years ago, there were a couple of people that won 2 of these at a time. You will be surprised how fast you can sell these tickets.

If you did not get your tickets at the meeting, Kaitlyn and her mother will have them at the Halloween Party and at the next meeting. Remember, it is everyones responsibility to help sell these tickets. The club will get back 7% of all monies that we raise for our Queen Contetant.

Our meeting on Monday will start at 6:30 pm. We will have Ms. Wendy Green to speak to us about the Fashion Show and Food Show. Then when the meeting is over, we will have the Hay Judging Workshop for everyone to attend that would like to learn more about hay judging. Mr. Greg Allen and County Agent, Willie Arnwine will be conducting this training session for anyone that is interested.

Remember to bring your tickets and money for the Fish Fry that will be on Saturday, October 17th from 6 pm to 8 pm at the showbarn. Kaitlyn is trying to get a head count!

There were approximately 20 people that participated in the Officer Training today. Mr. Barber did a great job in conducting this training. Thank you, Mr. Barber for doing this! Lookout, Footbridge and Cloverleaf Clubs all participated in this event. I hope everyone enjoyed this event and learned something from it. After the training, everyone enjoyed pizza and drinks.

Texas 4-H One Day

We will also be having this event on Saturday, October 10th. We will kick off with this event at 8 am and work around the showbarn for 2 to 3 hours. If you can attend, plan to do this. This will count as community service. Hopefully we will have a great time giving back to the showbarn.

We hope that you will mark you calendars for the 2009 Cherokee County Jr. Hay Judging contest. It will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Cherokee County Showbarn in Jacksonville. Registration will begin at 12:30 pm and the contest will begin at 1:00 pm.

There will be two college scholarships awared for the 1st and 2 ned place Overall High-Point Individuals.

There will be a Hay Judging Workshop scheduled for Monday, october 12, 2009 at 7:00 pm. It will be held at the Showbarn and will be sponsored by our club. This opportunity is open to ALL participants.

Please look at Hay Judging Guidelines under the Important Link column on the right side of the page for additional information about judging hay.

Hay Judging Information

The actual hay judging date will be announced soon!

If you would like to have your hay tested for the upcoming Annual Hay Show and Sale......it is FREE. Bring samples of hay in a large 55 gallon plastic trash bag, or bale of hay. Entry forms are available at various locations. The deadline will be Friday, September 18th at 5:00 pm. The Annual Hay Show and Sale will be held Thursday, October 22nd at the Cherokee County Exposition Center on Loop 456 in Jacksonville. A barbeque meal will begin at 6:00 pm with the auction beginning at 7:00 pm. Proceeds for the Annual Hay Show and Sale go towards improvements of the Cherokee County Exposition Center, scholarships, directly or indirectly on public awareness/education.
